Be Different! (rethink what you call yourself)
A recent missive by marketing guru Seth Godin reminded me of the importance of establishing a marketable brand in our communications and marketing outreach efforts. I think it’s the reason why churches with names like Mars Hill, Rock Harbor, and The Open Door are succeeding in reaching the community in ways that First Baptist of Lalaland never will. It speaks directly to how unmemorable names with common english words are, using words like: community, zone, church, first, whatever.
The change in the practice of choosing horrible names for church ministry is most evident in youth cultural outreach efforts where high school and junior high ministries are naming their events with more memorable monikers like The Edge. It appeals to the audience’s desire for something fresh, authentic, and yet vintage, if you will. Something real, beyond the worn out and blah meetings of their grandparents and relevant for the 21st century.
So, before you kick off your next ministry be it men’s group, outdoor activists, or the knitting club try appealing to the audience with names that are memorable and will strike a chord in their hearts. Names can and should be used to speak to the soul whenever possible. Here are a few suggestions if you’re stuck (and yes I give full permission for you to use these).
Men’s ministry: The Regiment: Speaks to man’s innate desire to conquer. Engages him as a warrior, full of vigor and strength to do battle against the forces of evil.
Women’s ministry: The Harbor: Reaches a woman’s heart through her innate desire for security.
These are just a few. Go think of your own and put a little more effort into strategic marketing of ministries in your church. You can do it!
