The Greener Church

So, for Earth Day 2008 I had decided to write a big long post about how the church should care more about the world God created for us and maybe even start a book about it! IT’S Been Done!!! I just found a book by Tri Robinson, a pastor who wrote the book Saving God’s Green Earth. The book is about why the church should care about the environment and includes examples of things his church has done to be more environmentally responsible. There is also a web site for the book which features some great resources and may give you some ideas for how your church can be more eco-friendly.

One new site I came across yesterday that I think everyone should read is called “Thinks that make you go green” where I learned an awesome new word and concept called “pre-cycling” which is even better than recycling. The key concept is reducing the amount of waste that needs to be recycled by things like, bringing your own bags to the grocery store, using your own water bottle, etc. If you bring your own bag, you don’t have to worry about recycling the plastic.

Still to come in a future post:

  • What is the effect of environmentalism on church culture or church business? Financial, social, etc.
  • How does this affect our efforts to market church to “greenies” or particular geographic markets where environmental issues and sustainability are major parts of the culture?
  • What does the Bible say about how we care for the planet and do we ignore those parts or are we paying attention?

Have a great earth day.

what would jesus vote for?
