Do You Take Sin Seriously?
I like John Piper, I really do. What I don’t like is that “finger in the chest” feeling I get sometimes when I read his commentary or listen to his sermons. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Piper is wrong or preaching and teaching in a way that is condemning. What I’m saying is that he is speaking truth and it quickens my heart.
In a recent post on his Desiring God Blog entitled 5 Ways Sin is Serious :: Desiring God, John piper describes the attitude of the heart that we should have when we have a healthy view of sin. He describes David’s response to his sin against Uriah the Hittite and his wife Bathsheba , “Babe-sheba” for those of you who have heard me preach on this before.
David didn’t feel it was enough for him to just feel bad that he hurt others, but recognized that his sin was against God first. That by disregarding God’s will for his life he was rejecting God and siding with the enemy. That’s a tough spot to be in an one we all choose when we prefer ourselves and our own lust over God’s perfect plan.
So… if this is you, recognize that your sin is opposition to God and then make it right by reorienting yourself from opposition with God to partnership with Him.
